How to Snap Out of a Funk (Without Forcing Positivity)

Do you have those days where you are just feeling in a funk?

Maybe you wake up and you immediately feel it. Where you open your eyes and it just feels OFF. Your body feels heavy and lethargic, yet you got enough sleep. You zombie yourself through the morning routine; coffee, shower, login and your day begins... yet the feeling does not dissipate.

Maybe you are driving to work or the store and someone cuts you off. ARGH! Of course! Maybe you slept through your alarm. Maybe you realize there was an important email you forgot to follow up on.

Or maybe this feeling of "funk" is for no real reason at all. It is just a feeling and you have no idea why or where it came from. Guess what. It is ok, to no feel ok. AND, there is something that you can do about it.

I’m not a research scientist. I’m a human being living a very human experience. And let me tell you, I’m a proud test subject in my own ongoing social and neuro-science experiments. So, here are a few things I’ve discovered that actually work when I need to snap out of a funk.

Cut the social media cord!

Omit all social media when you are feeling in a funk. PERIOD. When you’re in a funk, avoid social media. Period. It might feel like a distraction or quick fix but it’s not. Scrolling only feeds the funk. You’ll start comparing, critiquing, and convincing yourself that everyone else has it together while you don’t. Don’t go there. It will intensify the funk and keep you stuck there.

Instead try this...

1.Grab a trusty piece of paper and jot down every dang thing that you can think of that you are grateful for.

Set a timer for three minutes and write down EVERYTHING. Air. Coffee. Netflix. Family. Pizza. That new hand soap. A great parking spot. Don’t overthink it. Just write. Gratitude is like a reset button. It will lift your energy, shifts your focus, and reminds you how much good is still around you. Even during funky moments. Which will all of a sudden feel lighter!

2. Get off your butt and move. Stand up. Jump up and down for 10 seconds. Go outside and take 3 deep breaths. Stretch while sitting on the bus. ANYTHING to move your body. Anything that gets your body moving will also get your mood moving!

Thats it. It really is that simple, yet so many of us accept the feeling of funk as a sentence for the day.

But it doesn’t have to be. It’s just a feeling and feelings pass faster when we move through them with gratitude and action.

The next time you are feeling in a funk, give it a shot. Heck, give this a shot right now and see what this does for you. Dopamine highjack in motion!

Welcome, my funky bunch of friends, to the beautiful mess of being human and embracing the human experience.

We are in this together. All of us just doing our best. And some days, that’s more than enough.
